"Double D's" Helpful Tips
Production
- Get Creative. This camera changes the way that people will think about video. It's immediate. It's accessible. It's small and easy to use. Take advantage of these features and think of "out of the box" for ways in which you can use the camera to get unique shots.
- Picture. You must shoot 100% of your film on the VadoHD Camera, so make a small camera look big. It's not about the camera, but what you film and how you film it. The VadoHD has a 3/16" standard tripod mount. Use all your knowledge and all your nifty tools to get the most professional footage.
- Sound. The Vado HD has a built-in microphone, but no external sound input. If this microphone is not sufficient, we recommend that you record sound on another device. Use a slate to sync picture and sound. Note: The Vado HD camera records video and sound at an exact 30 frames per second and most other devices record sound at 29.97 frames per second. Therefore, if you choose to record sound on another device, there is a possibility that your sound and picture may go noticeably out of sync if a single shot runs longer that 50 seconds.
- Transfer & Backup. You are working in the digital world. Transfer your footage often and back up the original files. Also, import your files to Final Cut often to verify that your footage is solid.
Post-Production
- Using Final Cut. Vado HD cameras record with the AVI codec. For you Mac users out there editing on Final Cut Pro or Express, we recommend you download and install Perian. This is a plug-in that will allow your Quicktime engine to open and edit these clips in Final Cut. For step-by-step advice, visit http://www.tranquilli.org/my-hd-video-workflow/.
- Soundtrack. Your soundtrack, including music, must be created by you or you must have rights to use the music according to YouTube rules. If you can't convince your friend with the band to compose for you, you can find music on some royalty free music libraries.
- Visual Effects, Animation, Titles & Filters. Feel free to give your film the perfect filter treatment and to use titles. As long as 100% of the film is shot with the VadoHD Pocket Cam, you're good. You are allowed to use a small amount of animation and/or visual effects if needed to tell your story.
- Watermark. Your video must include a Vado HD watermark in the lower left hand corner. We've made this easy for you. Simply download the .png file and add the layer on a video track in your timeline. See "Red Harbor, Episode 1" for an example. Click here for further instructions.
Delivery
- Maximum Quality. The Creative Vado HD Momentum Film Contest uses YouTube to host the videos. We require that you upload the highest quality of video in the Vado HD native resolution 1280 x 720 as a Quicktime H.264 file so that your video will be presented at the optimum quality.
- Keep Your Project. If you are selected as a finalist, we will ask you to deliver us your original uncompressed file.
